There’s a natural magnetism to DUG’s folk brew. The duo, made up of Conor (Lorkin) O’Reilly and Jonny Pickett, formed in 2023 but sound like lifelong collaborators. Their music draws from both sides of the Atlantic, echoing the great American troubadours while channeling the rich storytelling of Irish folk.
That balance comes naturally. Born in America and Scotland before settling in Ireland, DUG’s members share a deep, cross-cultural musical heritage. O’Reilly spent nearly a decade in upstate New York before moving to Ireland in 2022, and you can hear that lived experience in songs like “Big Sundown” and “Jubilee,” the latter shortlisted for two Grammy nominations. Resonator guitar and banjo form the core of DUG’s sound, intricate and alive, always in sync.
They are funny too. Their lyrics twist and tease, finding levity in longing. Tracks like “Wheel of Fortune” radiate warmth and wit, mixing mischief with melancholy. DUG take the heavy with the light, turning it all into foot-tapping, infectious folk.
Unapologetically modern, DUG nod to tradition without leaning on it. No tweed coats, no pretension, just honesty and charisma. That authenticity led them to Claddagh Records, home to forward-thinking Irish acts like Niamh Bury, Lemoncello, and ØXN.
With their debut album on the horizon, DUG are gearing up for a massive 2025 that includes US dates at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, stops in Washington, Portland, and Idaho, and their debut Australian tour in October. Expect raucous Irish festival appearances and plenty more to come from this singular new voice in contemporary folk.
