About event

The opening concert of the jubilee year will offer a collage of chamber works by leading Czech composers, which at the same time accentuates this year's biggest musical theme - The Year of Czech Music 2024. The concert will begin with two compositions from České tancő, the peak and at the same time the last work of Bedřich Smetana, whose birth will be 200 years old this year. Next, the only chamber opus of the otherwise essential symphonist and representative of late Romanticism Gustav Mahler will be heard – the one-movement Piano Quartet in A minor is the work of the sixteen-year-old artist, who personally premiered it at the piano at the Vienna Conservatory in 1876. Piano Trio No. 1 Bohuslav Martinů transports the audience to the 1930s. The author said of the composition, which he composed during ten days in Paris: “I have no idea how I actually wrote this trio: it was sudden, as if I was guided by a foreign hand, and I composed something completely new!” The concert will end with Smeta's Piano Trio in G Minor, a magnificent lyrical poem that was composed less than three months after the death of the composer's five-year-old daughter, Bedřiška. The guest of Dvořák's trio will be violist Jiří Kabát.

Program:

  • Bedřich Smetana: Hulán, Furiant (from cycle Czech Dances, Series II)
  • Bohuslav Martinů: Piano Trio No. 1 (Cinq pièces brèves)< /li>
  • Gustav Mahler: Piano Quartet in A minor
  • Bedřich Smetana: Trio in G minor for piano, violin and cello, op. 15
