About event
Helen Epstein is a native of Prague who was born to Holocaust survivors in 1947 and grew up in New York City. She studied journalism at Columbia University and also studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
In August 1968, she experienced the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops, from where she managed to leave and very quickly gave her testimony about the situation when she published a report in the Jerusalem Post. After she published an article in The New York Times in 1977, "Heirs to the Holocaust", which was about her situation and experience as a second generation, hundreds of people who had similar experiences began to contact her.
Epstein then wrote a groundbreaking book, Children of the Holocaust, based on many interviews, where she brought her experiences and one of the first ever comprehensive views of transgenerational trauma. In her second book, Where She Came From, she traced the story of her mother's side of the family, which came from Central Bohemia, and in her third book, Long half-lives of love and trauma, she deals with the topic of sexual abuse to which she was exposed as a child.
The event will be held in English.
