About event

Oregon elementary students are scoring near the bottom of all states in reading and math. Recent attendance reports found that 34% of Oregon students were chronically absent, well above the national average of 23%. And, with the dismantling of the federal Department of Education, federal programs supporting services for students with disabilities are at risk.

But there is hope! Research shows that certain strategies are moving the needle, including initiatives focused on early literacy, career and technical education, and students’ physical and social-emotional health.

Join City Club to learn how these and other strategies can be implemented effectively, and why investing in them matters—not only for students themselves, but for Oregon as a state.

Panelists:
Dr. Kimberlee Armstrong, Superintendent, Portland Public Schools
Sarah Pope, Executive Director, Stand for Children Oregon
Bryan Butcher, Jr., Oregon's Teacher of the Year 2024-25

Moderator:
Julia Silverman, Education Reporter for The Oregonian/Oregon Live
