About event

Book presentation, reading and contemporary witness talk

Renate Werwigk-Schneider has seen what it means to live in a dictatorship: The 85-year-old suffered from repression early on due to her church engagement. She sat in prison twice in the GDR - because she wanted to leave the country that did not offer her freedom. It was only after her free purchase in 1968 that she managed to live a life in the Federal Republic as she had wished.

In conversation with Dorothee Fleischmann and Dr. Sarah Bornhorst, she talks about her moving life and her commitment to freedom and democracy today. Luise Wolfram reads excerpts from her new biography "There is no bit of dictatorship" (Westend Verlag).

Dr. Renate Werwigk-Schneider was born in Königs Wusterhausen and studied medicine in East Berlin. As a young woman, she tried twice to flee from the GDR and imprisoned. In 1968 it was finally bought by the Federal Republic. Today she regularly talks about her experiences as a contemporary witness with young people and visiting groups. In February 2025, she received the Federal Cross of Merit.

Dorothee Fleischmann works as a literary agent and author in Berlin. Renate Werwigk-Schneider's life story discovered her through a contribution in the Süddeutsche Zeitung. She spoke to her for the book for over a year, sighted her Stasi files, letters and personal documents.

Luise Wolfram was born in Apolda, Thuringia in 1987. She studied acting at the “Ernst Busch” University of Drama. From 2010 to 2015 she was a member of the Schaubühne Berlin. At the moment she can be seen regularly on television as crime scene commissioner Linda Selb from Bremen. She also plays in numerous feature films.

Moderation: Dr. Sarah Bornhorst, curator for contemporary witness work/oral history, Berliner Mauer
