About event
"It was a cold winter evening. Wolf trotted sullenly through the snow with his sleigh. An icy wind whistled through his hat. 'Hunger, hunger, hunger!' he murmured in time with his steps so as not to lose courage." This is how the book “A Sheep for Life” by the Dutchwoman Maritgen Matter begins, which was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize. It is the enchanting story of a very special encounter that shows what can be possible if you are willing to question your preconceived opinions.
Because Wolf wants to eat out that night and ends up finding 'a nice restaurant' in a sheepfold - with a helpful but unsuspecting sheep in it. In order not to cause a stir and to be able to eat in peace, he lures the sheep out into the night and persuades them to go on a sleigh ride together after “experiences”. The sheep is thrilled and deeply impressed by Wolf's sophistication. However, it becomes increasingly clear that sheep is much more than just a source of food: it is fun-loving, charming and lovable, a really great sheep. So Wolf's meal plans gradually become completely confused, torn between the wolf's hunger and the warmth of the stable. And suddenly the nighttime sleigh ride takes a dramatic turn.
“A Sheep for Life” is about the fragile happiness of togetherness, about the moment when something strange becomes familiar, and about how fulfilling it can be to take responsibility for someone else, even against your nature. A look into the heart can turn some supposedly inevitable “bad awakenings” into the opposite and into the better.
Play: Jeanette Friedrich, Wolfgang Kerbs
Book & direction: Matthias Paul
