El contubernio de Múnich y la transición. The Munich meeting of the Spanish opposition in 1962 and its role in the transition to democracy

[As part of the exhibition "Vamos a la playa. Holidays under Franco" at the Museum of European Cultures]

"Today the civil war ends", with these words from Salvador de Madariaga the 4th Congress of the European Movement, which took place in Munich from June 5th to 8th, 1962, ended. The meeting brought together for the first time the various sections of the anti-Franco opposition inside and outside the country and initiated a dialogue between monarchists and republicans, socialists and Christian democrats. The dictatorship's propaganda defamed the event, which was groundbreaking for the democratization process in Spain, as a “Contubernio” (“shameful meeting”). The regime, well aware of the importance of this meeting, launched its machinery of repression against the participants: imprisonment, banishment and exile. In a colloquium, the contribution of the meeting to political change in Spain and the character of the transition will be analyzed and discussed.

With: Birgit Aschmann (Humboldt University of Berlin), Rosa Pardo (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Madrid), César Rina (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Madrid)
Moderation: Carlos Collado Seidel (Philipps University of Marburg)
