Elisabeth Pape will present her debut novel “Halbe Portion” on December 3rd, in which she tells a very personal story about eating disorders, growing up in poverty and the constraints that come with it. The evening will be moderated by Maria-Christina Piwowarski.
The novel “Half Portion” shows why it is so difficult for those affected to break with learned structures and find a healthy way to deal with food and money. And he explores the question of how family supports us but also crushes us. A touching debut about a merciless illness and its tragicomic moments.
She is eating again. That was different. Growing up in poverty, alone with her obsessively thin mother, who emigrated to Berlin from the Ukraine, her future seemed pre-programmed. Now, in her late twenties, she has it somewhat under control. She jogs a lot, yes, counts every calorie, okay, but she always feeds her body morning, noon and night - almost - all the time. Even if she weighs every cent that the food and its preparation cost her. She rarely succumbs to her old habits of eating too much and then vomiting. However, there is still progress. And then there is a date that gives hope for a better life, for finally breaking out of the vicious circle. Or not?
Elisabeth Pape, born in 1995, daughter of a Ukrainian migrant, studied theater and literature at the Free University of Berlin and then dramatic writing at the Berlin University of the Arts. She was awarded the Kleist Sponsorship Prize 2023 and received the Leonhard Frank Scholarship 2023, which is awarded by the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg. Her plays have been, among other things, premiered at the Staatstheater Augsburg, Theater Koblenz and Mainfranken Theater Würzburg. Half Portion is her debut novel.
