About event
We cordially invite you!
Despite the geographical proximity between the Polish and German communities, there is a communication distance between them. The asymmetries in politics and economy existing between neighboring countries, additionally intensified by historical ballast, often become affect-inducing factors in public communication, especially in media messages, linking cognition with the sphere of emotions. This may result in the creation of incomplete or false knowledge about the European partner in a given community.
The neighborhood between Poland and Germany is a dynamic relationship that develops in the context of tensions related to the past, own interests and the European Union. This inherently conflict-generating network of connections takes on a more or less pronounced affective dimension in media discourse, which triggers or dynamizes the processes of inclusion, exclusion or identity formation.
Based on theoretical concepts in the field of linguistic discourse analysis, media linguistics and linguistic research on emotions and using empirical material (press texts and magazine title pages), I would like to present the discursive nature of such processes. Only a multidimensional view of emotions makes it possible to treat them as communication phenomena that are implemented in a specific media environment and used by discourse actors to create specific, emotionally colored images of reality.
At the end of the lecture, I would like to share my thoughts on conducting a conscious, well-thought-out and discursively implemented "politics of constructive emotions". In the media space, thanks to skillfully undertaken activities, it could effectively contribute to reducing potential tensions and avoiding the negative effects of specific communication activities.
