On Friday, December 13, the eleventh edition of Emptiness & Infinite Space will take place and will once again be an aspect of the no man's land between art and philosophy among the taken into account. Together with visual artist, poet and writer Michael Tedja and philosopher and researcher Noortje de Leij, we investigate how art can be critical and how art relates to politics.
In the history (of thought) art has long been subordinated to political, philosophical and social projects. Plato saw art as a dangerous disruption of the ideals that the 'philosopher-kings' had to realize in the city-state. The German philosopher Hegel also stated that art would ultimately become subordinate to thinking and even spoke of 'the death of art' in his Lectures on Fine Art. Had the last word been spoken and the critical role of art come to an end?
