Finissage: February 20th, 2026 with the performance “On the one who meanders” by Anna Nowicka
The exhibition The Pulse of the Oder shows the Oder as a living organism - not just as a political border between Poland and Germany, but as a vibrant, sensitive ecosystem that needs protection and care. The works of Cecylia Malik and Tom Kretschmer invite you to change your perspective: away from geopolitical attributions, towards an ecological view of the river as an actor, carrier of memory and being with its own rhythm.
In the works of the artist and activist Cecylia Malik - founder of the collective The River Sisters - the Oder becomes a place of community engagement and ecological solidarity. The film documentation of an action, paintings, banners and objects that can be seen in the exhibition carry the energy of those people who stand up for the rivers' right to live freely and against their over-regulation.
Tom Kretschmer approaches the river in a contemplative, almost meditative way. His photographs and videos make visible the microscopic yet monumental life cycles hidden in the river landscape. In the interior spaces of dead trees, in reflections and meanders, the Oder shows itself as a spiritual space in which decay and renewal are inextricably linked.
Together Malik and Kretschmer make the “pulse of the Oder” tangible - a pulse that can be felt on both banks of the river and connects people, cultures and ways of life. The exhibition reminds us that rivers are sentient beings and that their well-being remains inextricably linked to our own future on this planet.
