Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt was able to draw attention to himself during his studies with David Kindas and Aldo Parisot: Rostropovitch competition The jury, chaired by Mstislav Rostropovitch, the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris and also the price of contemporary music. He also won the award of the German Music Competition in Bonn and the 1st Prize at the International Australasian Cello Competition in New Zealand. He is a winner of the international Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow and the International Leonrad Rose Cello Competition in the USA. Since then, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt has been concerting in Europe, Russia and the USA as a soloist with the most renowned orchestras, such as the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra Berlin, the German Symphony Orchestra of the NDR, the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Radio Orchesters of Prague and Ljubljana, the Baltimore and Houston Symphony Orchestras as well as the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonia Prague among conductors such as Charles Dutoit, Marek Janowski, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Yutaka Sado, Hugh Wolff, Jiri Belohlavek, Vassili Sinaiski, Gerd Albrecht, Andrey Boreyko, Eivind Gullberg Jensen, Gabriel Feltz, Michael Sanderling, Markus Poschner and Fabrice Bollon. He is also a welcome guest, among other things, at the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival, at the Rheingau Music Festival and at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, where he already concerted together with Christoph Eschenbach. Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt is also intensively devoted to chamber music, where he appeared with important artists such as Lang Lang, Emanuel Ax, Gil Shaham, Nikolaj Znaider, Leonidas Kavakos, Kyoko Takezawa, Miriam Fried, Edgar Meyer and David Shifrin. He was also a member of the Chamber Music Society Two of Lincoln Center in New York and with Jens Peter Maintz forms the cello duo “Cello Duello”. Concerts of the past seasons led him to the Berlin Philharmonic, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Philharmonie am Gasteig and the Herculessaal Munich, the Kennedy Center Washington, Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, to Theater de Chatelet and Theater de Champs Elysee in Paris, the Wigmore Hall London, Prags Rudolfinum and Tokyos Suntory Hall. In September 2001, his CD “French Impressions” was released at Sony Classical, and in September 2004 he also followed his highly acclaimed recording of Sergei Prokofiev's cello concerts at Sony Classical. Last year, his recording of the cello concerts of Schumann and Elgar at Sony Classical appeared. At the Capriccio label, his recording of Bloch's “Voice in the Wilderness” with the Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra Berlin also appeared. Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt was awarded the prize of German record criticism and the Diapason d’Or in 2013 for his recording of Carl Maria von Weber's piano quartet (with Isabelle Faust, Boris Faust and Alexander Melnikov). Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt plays on a violoncello by Matteo Gofriller from the former possession of Hugo Becker.
