About event

Book presentation with the translator Marie Alpermann and the Slavic scholar Prof. Dr. Angela Richter - Moderation: Dr. Henrike Schmidt

In her essays, Dubravka Ugrešić sharply and humorously takes apart the culture of remembrance, sometimes migration policy, and dismantles nationalism and right-wing tendencies, misogyny and sexism in the literary industry. She explores the question with subtle sensitivity: What is actually “European” about this Europe? She writes about our uncertain future and the fear that arises from the lack of utopias - utopias that could structurally change the world. Originally published in 2013, her brilliant, entertaining analyzes of current problems still resonate today.

Dubravka Ugrešić was born in Yugoslavia (Kutina) in 1949. Before she had to leave Croatia in 1993 for political reasons, she worked at the Institute of Literature at the University of Zagreb. She has received numerous prizes for her work, such as the Jean Améry Prize for European Essay writing, the Neustadt International Prize and the Heinrich Mann Prize. Her books have been translated into 30 languages. The novels “The Ministry of Pain” and “Baba Jaga Lays an Egg” and the volumes of essays “Reading Forbidden” and “Karaoke Culture” have been published in German. She lived in Amsterdam until her death in 2023.

'Europe in Sepia' was created with the support of the Creative Europe program of the European Commission
