Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a search engine programmer, wins a meeting with the boss and rich, eccentric company founder Nathan (Oscar Issac). On his highly secure natural estate, Nathan is researching artificial intelligence and offers Caleb his cooperation to determine whether Ava (Alicia Vikander) is conscious on the test subject. Observed by Nathan through surveillance cameras, he becomes convinced of her individuality, so he develops an emotional relationship with her. Confronted with her impending "death" via reprogramming after the test is completed, he decides to disable the estate's security systems and escape with Ava.
