About event
Join us for a workshop lead by cultural researcher, radio and media producer and DJ Niki Matita. Focused on experimental sound production and radio art. Suitable for anyone interested in sound art, radio and as well as podcasts and different modes of listening.
The workshop will focus at first on a listening session of Niki Matita's radiophonic composition Fernempfangsstelle #1. In radio plays, features or reports, the research or production of certain sounds and soundscapes, e.g. so-called “atmospheres” or “atmos”, is part of the production work, which are usually determined in advance and scripted according to the scenes of the piece.
An opposite approach, such as in an experimental radio production like Fernempfangsstelle #1, is to start from concrete sounds and develop the content from there - not from e.g. a text, scripted dialog or score.
We will move into a second, active part of the workshop with some (deep) listening exercises to focus on deconstructing the creation of the piece on the level of the use of different sound sources and their dramaturgical meaning for the narrative.
• Listening session Fernempfangsstelle #1
• Listening exercises inspired by Pauline Oliveros and AGF
• Listening to excerpts of the play to analyze different types of
sounds and source materials
• Discussion of the dramaturgical design of story-telling using
sounds and the challenge of acoustically documenting a
historical event for which there is no original sound material
of the event
• Encouragement to develop your own approaches
"Deep Listening is listening to everything all the time, and reminding yourself when you're not. But going below the surface too, it's an active process. It's not passive. I mean hearing is passive in that soundwaves hinge upon the eardrum. You can do both. You can focus and be receptive to your surroundings. If you're tuned out, then you're not in contact with your surroundings. You have to process what you hear. Hearing and listening are not the same thing." - Pauline Oliveros

Niki Matita: Fernempfangsstelle
Rudolf Formis, a quirky Stuttgart engineer, radio amateur activist and broadcasting pioneer built the first transmitting facilities of Süddeutsche Rundfunk-AG in Stuttgart in 1923 and worked here for ten years as a broadcasting technician. Among other things, he was responsible for the planning, construction and operation of a long-distance radio receiving station to be installed above the hills of Stuttgart in Schloss Solitude, which was responsible for the entire territory of the Reich - unique in Germany at the time. After fleeing Nazi persecution and brief exile, he was murdered in 1935 by henchmen of Reinhard Heydrich, head of the Security Main Office, in Czechoslovakia. Here, he is celebrated among radio amateurs to this day as a hero against Hitler. The piece was broadcasted as part of rAdioCUSTICA intermedia project on Czech Radio Vltava.
