About event
The ethnographic photography exhibition is organized by the Mebengokré-Xikrin people of the Mrõtidjam village in the Trincheira-Bacajá Indigenous Land in the Brazilian Amazon in a collaboration between anthropologists Paride Bollettin and Rochelle Foltram, the Associação Bebô Xikrin do Bacajá, the Department of Anthropology from the Masaryk University and the Ibero-American Zone in Brno.
The Mebengokré-Xikrin made and selected this series of images to present the multiple facets of their daily practices such as: gardening, hunting, fishing, the production of artifacts, as well as performances, rituals, ornamental clothing and the application of body paint. These activities require following specific styles, correct postures and a good way of relating to others. All of these practices refer to a fundamental concept: mei, the “beauty” incorporated in everything that is done appropriately and correctly. “Beauty,” mei, is not simply an attention to aesthetics, but a movement toward the production of what refers to a correct way of being, an ethic. Thus, the moments presented in the images go through this process following the relationships between people.
The images in the exhibition portray the flow of time in the intimacy of people, in gestures, in looks, highlighting the “beauty” that continues to be sought by the Mebengokré-Xikrin indigenous people of the Brazilian Amazon despite the threats it faces from non-indigenous society.
In conjunction with the exhibition, a screening of the film Amazonas, the largest river in the world, will take place, as well as a fair of indigenous crafts.
Opening: Wednesday, October 16, 6:00pm. The exhibition will be available until November 29.
