Fat Freddy's Drop will celebrate 21 years of "Based On A True Story" with five concerts in Germany this summer
The legendary band Fat Freddy's Drop will finally return to German stages in 2026: As part of their "Based On A True Story 21st Anniversary Tour 2026" they will celebrate the anniversary of their groundbreaking debut album "Based On A True Story.” The five dates in Germany mark a special moment in the musicians' history, as they are the first appearances since the sudden death of founding member Chris "MU" Faiumu. Despite the great loss, the band is determined to continue their musical journey - for the love of music and in memory of MU. Lead singer Dallas Tamaira explains, "It's important for us to honor the intentions we had together with MU, and playing this album live is part of that." Since forming in Wellington, New Zealand in 1999, Fat Freddy's Drop have developed from an insider tip of the underground scene into a globally celebrated live phenomenon. Their distinctive blend of reggae, dub, soul, techno and jazz makes every concert an ecstatic experience that resembles an energetic, emotional and deeply danceable celebration of music. The now celebrated debut “Based On A True Story” was released as an independent production in 2005 and became a milestone: the album stayed in the New Zealand Top 40 for an incredible 111 weeks, won eight New Zealand Music Awards and won at the British Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Music Awards. Saxophonist Scott Towers says: "This was our first studio album, and its success was the springboard for an incredible journey together. We want to pay tribute to the music, honor MU and of course play for all the fans who have supported us over the years."
Internationally, Fat Freddy's Drop are celebrated as one of the best live bands in the world. Whether at sold-out shows in Europe, Australia or Aotearoa: the musicians inspire with a unique mix of improvisation, groove and euphoria. Critics describe their concerts as “an experience like no other”, “an ecstatic fusion of reggae and techno” or “a live show full of energy, soul and joy of playing”. When Fat Freddy's Drop bring their "Based On A True Story 21st Anniversary Tour" to Germany in 2026, the audience will not expect a nostalgic look back, but rather a lively celebration of cohesion and musical freedom - in the spirit of MU and the unwavering love of music.
The tour is presented by event., kulturnews and laut.de.
