Crises and traumatic events push families to their limits and in mental distress. Whether loss, illness, separation, violence, escape or other stressful events - such experiences can leave deep psychological traces, especially on children and young people, and impair their development.

A lot of helpful things can be done in the case of both acute crises and long-term stress! The speaker conveys how acceptance and openness support families in honestly addressing stressful events and preventing renewed stress through silence. Conversations about death, suicide or violence remain challenging - even for experienced counselors - but are central to providing healthy support for families. The focus is on recognizing and classifying traumatic reactions, understanding the dynamics of crisis processes as well as the importance of acceptance, truthfulness and support in support.

Using practical examples, concrete interventions are presented and shown how counselors can support parents and caregivers to speak openly with children and young people about loss, illness or death - without sugarcoating and without overwhelming (from acute crisis intervention and psychoeducation to medium-term support to methods from trauma therapy). The aim is to promote confidence in dealing with family crises, strengthen resources, overcome speechlessness and show ways in which families can regain stability and trust despite intense stress.

Clinical psychologist and psychotherapist (IP), training analyst in the Austrian Association for Individual Psychology. Many years of work at the University Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Vienna General Hospital, founder and, until 2021, psychotherapeutic director of the “Boje” trauma center – outpatient clinic for children and young people in crisis situations. Construction of the Boje trauma center, a further training facility for all professional groups who work with traumatized children.
