About event
[English below] Fiesta de Día de Muertos
The festival of the dead is the largest and most important folk festival in Mexico. According to ancient Mexican belief, the dead come to visit them from the afterlife on All Saints Day and celebrate a contemplative and happy reunion with the living with music, dancing and delicious food. Far beyond Mexico, this colorful, turbulent festival is celebrated all over the world, including in Berlin. Celebrate with us! At the Mexican Festival of the Dead in the Humboldt Forum, you can expect a market, handicrafts, workshops and activities for children as well as a colorful evening program that addresses the themes of death - migration - racism with an ofrenda, theater, dance, performance and live music.
During the celebrations, colonial and pre-Hispanic cultural traditions come together, with the pre-Hispanic faith asserting itself in a subversive way over the Catholic one. The resulting fusion shows the conflict between two worlds.
The Monarch Butterfly accompanies us through the Fiesta de Día de Muertos in the theme year “Family Relationships”. It stands for many families, for the loving connection to the deceased and the hope that their souls will find their way home every year during the festival of the dead.
