About the film:
The last Hebrew from Hlohovec is a film about memory, identity and the consequences of fear, which managed to silence hundreds of people long after the end of the war.
Jozef Neumann, the film's "last Hebrew from Hlohovec", came from an Orthodox Jewish family. He was born after the war in 1946 and was the last member of the Jewish community who completed a bar mitzvah in the Hlohovec synagogue before it was demolished in 1960. His narrative frames the story of the Jewish community, which was once the natural heart of Hlohovec, but after the war it disappeared from the city and is now slowly disappearing from the map and from the city's memory — under the pressure of war, totalitarianism and fear, which was able to survive for generations. Against the background of the personal stories of people such as the prominent sculptor Jaroslav Róna, doctor Mira Klein, professor Juraj Stern or actress and director Dalia Shimko, the film shows that not only the people of Hlohov, but the whole of Slovakia lost not only their Jewish neighbors, but also a fundamental source of cultural, human and intellectual strength.
