The Final Girl exhibition presents the work of Dominika Brečková, graduate of the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, which is between painting, embroidery and object creation. It disrupts the boundaries of the image and turns it into spatial intervention. The name refers to the horror trophy "Final Girl" - the last survivor heroine, which at first glance does not seem to be the most striking figure, but its inner strength and perseverance puts it in the center of the story. This motive in the author's work becomes a metaphor for female experience - on the one hand fragile, vulnerable, on the other hand persistent, able to survive and resist. Breček's “Final Girl” is an alterego and a mirror - a female figure that carries layers of cultural deposits, prejudices and historically attributed roles, but at the same time it can break free. The author is between the position of heroine and observer: she collects women's stories, follows relationships and dynamics in women's and mixed groups, processing them through her own experience. The concept of works is also a paraphrase of the relationships that women create among themselves, what demands they place on themselves and how they are judged. Her works lead us to the question of what it means to survive - and what the female experience looks like when reality, myths and pop -cultural images overlap and rewrite each other. narratives. She studied painting at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica (2017) and in 2021 she became the finalist of the Painting of the Year competition. He defies with the stereotype and imaginary tasks that have been historically attributed to women and seek heroines, boldly and defying conventions. It draws inspiration from Asian culture, especially from Japanese art and philosophy Aikida, which connects to the European context. Traditionally perceived female techniques transforms meaning to bearers and, through a fragmented figure and ambivalent plant symbols, examines the bodyality, identity and fragility. Her works work with tension between beauty and concern, tradition and its deconstruction. He lives and works in the Zemplin Hamry.
Looking forward to your visit.
