About event
The Allard Pierson is also organizing the Frederik Mulllezing this year. This time the lecture is provided by Marita Mathijsen, emeritus-professor of Dutch literature at the University of Amsterdam.
The happiness of preserved past
What a chance preserved documents are
The historian is like the prince who kisses Sproosje Wakker: she or raises old paper. Archives and libraries contain documents that record facts - birth certificates, wills, dates. But at least as valuable are the pieces that were often kept by chance. Letters, diaries and small printed matters can make us feel the drama of history.
Marita Mathijsen shows how it is precisely that coincidental papers - from Anne Frank's diaries to a lost letter from Aagje Deken - give us an unexpected glimpse into the past. History is not only in fact, but adventurous.
about Marita Mathijsen
Marita Mathijsen specializes in the 18th and 19th-century literature and culture. Among other things, she wrote the spirit of the poet (1992, awarded the Multatuliprijs), the biography Jacob van Lennep: a inspired scaffold (2018) and a free spirit. The exceptional life of Betje Wolff (2024).
