Freiheit als Grundrecht: Zwischen Schutz und Streit (Podiumsdiskussion)
Freedom as a fundamental right: Between protection and dispute (panel discussion)
Event by: Leibniz-Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung, Berlin
Location: Pariser Str. 1, Pariser Straße 1, Berlin - Bezirk Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf
About event
Freedom of expression, freedom of art, freedom of science, freedom of the press – many freedoms are legally guaranteed, but are still under pressure. Polarized public debates are renegotiating where freedom ends and regulation begins. The event sheds light on why these freedoms in particular are considered the cornerstone of liberal democracy, what makes their defense so complex - and what tensions arise when they are challenged by digital communication, political instrumentalization or social change.
Discussing:
Prof. Dr. Eva Geulen (ZfL)
Prof. Dr. Dorothea Gädeke (Free University of Berlin / SCRIPTS)
Steffen Grimberg (DJV Berlin, KNA media service)
Moderation: Gesa Ufer
The event is a cooperation between the Cluster of Excellence Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS) with the Humboldt University of Berlin, the Center for Eastern European and International Studies (ZOiS) and the ZfL as part of Berlin Science Week.
The discussion will take place in the Eberhard-Lämmert-Saal, entrance Meierottostr. 8, 10719 Berlin.

To the series »Contested Freedom(s)«
Freedom is a central promise of liberal societies - and at the same time a constantly renegotiated, contested concept. It is at the center of political disputes, moral dilemmas and social negotiation processes. The event series "Contested Freedom(s)" by the Cluster of Excellence Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS) is dedicated to the tensions between individual and collective freedom claims, legal protection and social responsibility from different perspectives. Three events at the Humboldt University, the ZOiS and the ZfL will shed light on how freedom is thought, shaped and threatened - and what role it plays in the resilience of democratic societies.
