A grumpy captain and a nouveau riche banker engage in merciless competition on the banks of the Mississippi. Buster is the captain's son and, as an unwilling Romeo, gets caught up in the loyalty conflict between his love for his father and his love for the banker's daughter. The film contains the famous scene in which the facade of a house falls on William Jr. during the hurricane. falls - but with exactly one window opening so that nothing happens to him. Keaton performed this stunt himself – as was common practice at the time.
Steamboat Bill, jr. was not a box office success for Buster Keaton. After several flops, this film heralded the end of his collaboration with producer Schenk.
