The young Anna Kaminski lives right on the zone border in Thuringia. Her son, whose father died in the war, lives with his grandparents in Bavaria, just a few kilometers away in the west. But because she always wants to see him again, she secretly sneaks across the border. During one of her walks she meets the Bavarian border policeman Carl Altmann. The West German helps Anna bring her son illegally to the East and they both fall in love. The only way to meet is between the borders in an abandoned train station. Finally, Anna wants to finally flee to the western sector with her son, but the borders are becoming increasingly closed... (filmportal.de)
One of the few German films from the 1950s that critically dealt with the present at the time.
Heaven without Stars was the only German entry to be invited to the Cannes Film Festival in 1956. However, the festival committee canceled the film before it was shown because it allegedly hurt the feelings of other nations. The reason for the disqualification of the film may have been the German federal government's protest against the nomination of the Auschwitz documentary "Night and Fog" by Alain Resnais.
The film received the gold film ribbon together with "Devil in Silk" in 1956. The silver film ribbon went to Eva Kotthaus (Best Young Actress), Horst Buchholz (Best Young Actor) and Erich Ponto (Best Supporting Role).
"Excellently photographed, well acted, but uneven in design and burdened with pretentious dialogue. Still impressive as a plea for more humanity." (Lexicon of International Film)
