Two workers battle an old car immediately after the end of the Second World War. Seven props that you find in or on the car attribute seven stories that this car had to "experience" since the beginning of the Nazi dictatorship and now tells. There is a date in the windshield - January 30, 1933, the day of Hitler's seizure of power; A comb leads back to a lighted composer; A forgotten hat clip establishes the connection to the fate of two people in a so -called "mixed marriage"; An illegally active suddenly disappears; The memory of July 20, 1944 becomes awake; Then the car makes its way through the winter on the Eastern Front, and finally it is back home - especially at the right time to see the dark end. In August 1946 the shooting began, with a borrowed camera. The remaining equipment also had to be bought, borrowed or otherwise procured on the black market. Since there was no studios in Hamburg at the time, it was filmed exclusively in the open air.

This made the filming a torture, especially in the hard winter 1946/47, the temperatures fell to minus 26 degrees Celsius. In the absence of studios, no rejection could also be used for the car trips, which is why for some scenes cameraman igor Oberberg had to be strapped to the bonnet and a tone car connected to cables next to the vehicle. Predicate "particularly valuable".

Film historian and journalist in the network of German Kinematheken chose the film in 1995 to be one of the 100 most important German films of all time.

"It is difficult to toneless in the whole German post -war literature, so in the 'inconsistent' and so precisely the characteristic language of the tyranne It is shown very quietly with the natural heart, there is no counter argument. ('The Present', 1948)

"Käutner has not disappointed the hopes on him in specialist circles. On the contrary: Technically, in his 'emergency art' of ideas and abstract, he has probably even exceeded it. [...] Since June 13, 1947, there has been a serious German film again." (Wolfdietrich Schnurre in 'The New Film')
