About event

In the mid-1930s, circles of friends, discussion and training circles formed in Berlin around Arvid Harnack, a senior government councilor in the Reich Ministry of Economics, and his wife Mildred, as well as the employee of the Reich Aviation Ministry Harro Schulze-Boysen and his wife Libertas. In 1940/41, a loose network of several Berlin resistance circles emerged. They include more than 150 anti-fascists from very different social backgrounds and ideological traditions: students, artists, journalists and administrators, including many women.
Their forms of resistance are diverse. This includes discussions about political and artistic issues, helping the persecuted and documenting the violent crimes of the fascists.
They reach out to the public beyond their inner circle by distributing leaflets and sticky notes. Finally, they make contact with like-minded people in other parts of Germany. In 1940/41, Harnack and Schulze-Boysen also passed on military-important messages to the Soviet Union.
In the summer of 1942, the Gestapo uncovered the resistance organization around Harnack and Schulze-Boysen and investigated them under the collective name “Red Chapel”. The arrested members are therefore accused of being “traitors”. At the end of 1942, the Reich Court Martial handed down the first death sentences; In total, more than 50 members of the “Red Orchestra” were murdered.
On December 22, 1942, the first eleven members of the “Red Orchestra” were executed. We want to commemorate the murdered resistance fighters with a rally on the 83rd anniversary of these executions and other activities.
