The idea of SHARED READING, which comes from England, is based on the simple but powerful idea of letting words have an effect on you - across all cultural, social and age boundaries.
Trained reading leaders accompany the so-called shared reading sessions, in which the participants can exchange ideas and meet each other about what they have read and heard. Anyone who listens is already part of it.
Shared Reading is neither therapy nor a book club or an ambitious literature group, but rather a method of experiencing the beneficial effects of literature, of texts and words, in an atmosphere of effortless openness.
How it works: People come together in a protected room for around 90 minutes to read world literature - a story and a poem - aloud together. They pause to think and talk about what they have read and its impact. No prior knowledge is necessary, everyone can take part, entry is free.
The groups are led by volunteer reading leaders. They select the texts, bring them for everyone and accompany the resulting discussions.
