About event

Wei -Wei Li (soprano) & Isaac Lam (piano)
“Reimagining Water”

“Water, in its various forms - whether in rivers, seas or lakes - remains the same in its deepest being. It flows and transforms, but its essence does not change. ”

soprano Wei-Wei Li and pianist Isaac Lam present a program in which the Element Water is the connecting factor. For Wei-Wei, water is fascinating enough an anchor point in her polygonable life. It connects her today the her past, her "here" with her "there". “I was born in Taiwan and I am on a (self) journey of discovery since I left my birthplace as a teenager. However, when I look at the shimmering water, the dancing lights seem to bring me back to the seas, lakes and rivers of my past. ” The program sings the water in all its various forms, with music ranging from Hsiao Tyzen and Nicholas Ho Mourning: Mourning for a loved one, a family member or friend, but also smaller forms of mourning such as leaving you behind an old version of yourself, mourning a future that is no longer possible or mourning for the passing summer. This theme, the transience of things, is the common thread in this recital. Soprano Sara Corbey and pianist Matthijs Jongen investigate various forms of transience and what is about it: the hope. Hope for redemption of mourning, a better world or freedom. It focuses on the song cycle "Love Songs", by the Dutch composer Bertha Frensel Wegener Koopman on poems by the Indian Rabindranath Tagore. The theme is further explained by composers Clara Schumann, Lili Boulanger and Kurt Weill, who each have tried to express these universal emotions in their own way.
