Back to the time of the Cold War with the Berliner Unterwelten
As part of the “Civil Defense” discussion series, we go into the Berlin underground: How did West Berlin prepare for a possible nuclear war during the Cold War?
This guided tour by the Berliner Unterwelten e.V. impressively shows how shelters were reactivated in the western part of the city and new bunkers were built - many of which are now converted into subway stations, parking garages or storage rooms.
Station 1: Blochplatz civil defense facility
A protective building from the Second World War, put back into operation between 1981 and 1983. In an emergency, 1,318 people would have found protection here for up to 48 hours.
Station 2: Pankstraße subway station
After a short subway ride, we visit a so-called multi-purpose facility from 1977. This modern nuclear shelter - now a listed building - was intended to provide care for 3,339 people for weeks. Fully equipped with an underground waterworks, reinforced concrete gates and a diesel emergency power generator, it conveys a depressingly realistic picture of the preparations for “Day X”.
Note: The tour is not barrier-free. Please bring weatherproof clothing and sturdy shoes.
