About event
“We must create a world free of nuclear weapons and violence!” A film about Mikhail Gorbachev and German elective affinities (by Ralf Eger)
Mikhail Gorbachev: "In the mid-1950s, by which time I was already a member of the leadership of the Komsomol youth association in Stavropol, I was shown a documentary about the consequences of an atomic bomb explosion that was secret at the time. From one second to the next, houses turned into piles of rubble, and only the burned ones of the pets remained Skeletons left. - I left the cinema completely distraught. The other spectators were just as shocked. A single thought came to mind: We, I, we all have to fight for peace without conserving our strength! For a whole life. Mikhail Gorbachev ended the (first) Cold War, he signed the most important disarmament treaty in world history - the INF Treaty (terminated by Donald Trump in 2019), which, unique in the Cold War, scrapped an entire category of weapons (and the most dangerous one at that) - he, together with his American counterpart Ronald Reagan, ensured that 80 percent of the world's nuclear warheads were destroyed and in January 1986 he laid a sensational one concrete roadmap for a world free of nuclear weapons for the year 2000.
The film begins with this quote from the Nobel Peace Prize winner, which is not accompanied by any images - he also told the story to the author of this text in April 2017. Ralf Eger, who has already presented two films about the former ARD Moscow correspondent Gabriele Krone-Schmalz - "Understanding" and "Change of Perspective" - recently finished "Gorbachev and Gödelitz - Peace", a film that not only memorializes the first and last president of the Soviet Union, but also forms the final part of the Krone-Schmalz trilogy and pays tribute to a whole series of other people.
Gabriele Krone-Schmalz, who was the first of the Western correspondents accredited in Moscow to conduct an interview with Gorbachev in March 1990 and later cooperated intensively with him as part of the Petersburg Dialogue - which has now been canceled by the German side - and the journalist Bettina Schaefer, who in the summer of 2023, on the first anniversary of Gorbachev's death, published the now award-winning memorial volume "Mikhail Gorbachev - How he our lives." changed”, are - in addition to the hosts - the main protagonists of an event at Gut Gödelitz in mid-October 2024 in honor of Mikhail Gorbachev.
