About event

The combination of a congratulations and commemorative concert is not quite common. Today's event will be an exception, because there was an opportunity. Both main personalities were born just a few days apart. Jaromír Havlík saw the light of the world on May 17, 1950 in Liberec, Otomar Kvěch 25 May of the same year in Prague. These days we commemorate 75 years since their birth. Both were in common in addition to the near date of birth. Of course, the main denominator was music. Although everyone in the event of different areas eventually linked them to teaching on HAMU in Prague.

Jaromír Havlík as a recognized music historian still successfully teaches the history of music and many other vocational subjects at this school. From 1969 to 1974 he studied music science and general history at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague, and expanded his studies between 1975 and 1976 with a postgraduate course of music theory at HAMU in Prague. Subsequently, from 1975 to 1976 he was employed at the FOK concert agency, at the same time he was a researcher of the Institute for theory and History of Art, and later the Institute for the Music Science of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Since the 1990s he has been working on HAMU, since 1997 as a associate professor, since 2001 as a professor, from 2004 to 2014 he led the Department of Music Theory and History, and from 2014 to 2017 he was a vice -dean for pedagogical activities, science and research. Two of his monographs of the Czech Symphony 1945–1980 and Jaroslav Doubrava also come from this area. The composer in the grip of two totalites. But his knowledge is not limited to this period. In addition to lectures mapping a number of other styles, he also wrote a chapter of musical Classicism in the team publication History of Music Jaroslav Smolka. In addition, he is the author of a large number of studies, reviews, radio programs and also deals with organology, which he also lectures at HAMU. He occasionally focuses on the composition. Outside Ham, he worked at the Prague Conservatory as a long -time teacher. Hundreds of students have passed under his pedagogical leadership, and most of them still remember these hours. He studied the play at the organ with Josef Kubán, a composition with Miroslav Raichl, František Kovaříček and Jan Zdeněk Bartoš, who also taught him privately before his arrival at the conservatory. Since 1969 he studied composition at HAMU in Prague, one semester in the class Emil Hlobil, then at Jiří Pauer. At the age of 70 he worked as a corepetitor at the Prague National Theater. The compositional group of generational peers, including Vladimír Tichý, Miroslav Kubička, Pavel Jeřábek, Štěpán Rak, Juraj Filas and Jiří Gemrot, was of considerable importance for its compositional development.
In 1976 he began working as a music editor on Czechoslovak Radio, with which he was linked for decades and in 1980 he became the secretary of the Czech Union of Music Composers. Since the 90s he worked in the Czechoslovak (then Czech) radio at the Vltava station as a music editor and dramaturg. In these years, his pedagogical career began. He began teaching music theory and composition at the Prague Conservatory. Since 1997 he became the head of the composers department. Since 2001 he taught theoretical subjects at HAMU, where he was appointed associate professor in 2014. Since 2016 he has led the Department of Music and Theoretical Disciplines until his sudden death in 2018. As a teacher, he gained students with his incredible knowledge, but also because of his cordial nature. Kvěch's compositional work is quite extensive and consists of approximately eighty works. It interferes with many areas and in the list we find compositions of orchestral, concert, chamber, choral, song, piano or organ. In the publication legacy, Kvěch's most important work is the basics of classical musical compositions published five years before his death. In this publication he gave basic and often very practical information to beginning composers.
