About event
How is life in Greenland? What was the fate of the adopted Greenlandic children? How have Danish-Greenland relations changed in the past and what are they like today? What to read about Greenland in Czech?
The Danish writer Iben Mondrup, who grew up in Greenland, accepted the invitation to the Greenland evening on the waves of the Vltava, whose landscape, family themes and cultural clashes significantly shape her work. In particular, we will talk about the autobiographical novel Godhavn (2014) about childhood in a family of Danish teachers in the town of Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn in Danish) on Disko Island and the trilogy Tabita (2020-2023) inspired by real events about Greenlandic siblings who are adopted by a Danish couple in the 1960s and taken to Denmark.
In addition to literature and we will also touch on socio-historical topics, Greenlandic traditions and the current political situation. The second guest of the discussion will be Danish translator Magdalena Jírková, who translated, among other things, Kim Leine's novel Prophets from the Fjord of Eternity, in which the Danish and Greenlandic views of the world clash already at the end of the 18th century, when a young missionary arrives in the Danish colony in Greenland. There will also be tips on other books, films and series, thanks to which you can get to know Greenlandic culture.
Jitka Jindřišková is the moderator.
Danish, translated into Czech.
Entry is voluntary
Not going to be in Prague? The author will also perform at the Month of Author Reading festival in Brno, Ostrava and Prešov.
Watch out! The event takes place on board the ship, so don't forget to bring a sweater with you. In case of bad weather, the event will be moved to the cozy below deck.
Organized by the Scandinavian House in cooperation with the Author's Reading Month festival, (A)void Floating Gallery and Větrné mlýny publishing house, with the financial support of hl. City of Prague and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
