City plagued by fires. The houses of decent middle-class citizens are turned to ashes out of nowhere. The businessman Mr. Biedermann can't even light a cigar because of it. Oh, what kind of world is this today?! He doesn't care about some fires. He wants to have peace.
When the bell rings and an unknown person stands behind the door asking for shelter. Biedermann lets her go, not out of pity, but out of duty. He must behave like a good citizen. More to come soon. Unknown guests in the house start a cycle of grotesque situations. What is this collective of would-be arsonists and their mysterious attitudes that will turn Mr. Biedermann's life upside down? Should he sympathize with an unknown force and believe in progressive change at any cost? Or rather maintain the status quo and risk conservatism? How to cope with an ambiguous situation? Who to trust? One side has to be the right one. But what if...?
Swiss playwright and novelist Max Frisch wrote the play Mr. Biedermann and the Arsonists under the influence of his experiences of the communist coup in Czechoslovakia, which he observed with his own eyes during repeated visits to Prague in 1948. However, the play was not a one-time use, but a grotesque, timeless satire criticizing the bourgeois petty bourgeoisie. Through this sporadically presented title, we once again ask ourselves the question of how to confront something that is foreign to us and that we cannot or even do not want to understand. Where is the line between solidarity and conformity today?
The title role of Mr. Biedermann will be played by long-time member of the HaDivadla acting troupe Jiří Miroslav Valůšek.
