≡ HAILU MERGIA

Accordionist, seasoned conductor, arranger and keyboardist Hailu Mergia is a prince of Ethiopian jazz. In the 1970s, he was keyboardist and accordionist for the Walias Band, one of the most popular groups of the golden age of Ethiopian music.

In 1981, after the band's only tour group in the United States, Mergia remained in the capital, fleeing the brutal Derg military regime that had taken control of his homeland. But he never stopped making music, establishing himself as a pioneer of the Ethiopian afro-funk sound and being the subject of the mini-doc “2022 IT IS A SOUL: A Portrait of Hailu Mergia”.

The story of Hailu Mergia is one of survival and belated justice for years of exile: The maestro, who was the leader of Addis Ababa's favorite dance group, Walias , emigrated to the United States after the Mengistu regime came to power in Ethiopia. After running several businesses, he eventually became a taxi driver at Washington's Dulles Airport, while continuing to practice keyboarding in the backseat of his vehicle during downtime. In 2013, Hailu returned to the live music circuit after blogger turned label owner Brian Shimkovitz of Awesome Tapes From Africa found him to re-release his unusual, multi-tracked 1986 solo effort His Classical Instrument - "If Cluster Had Had it been from Ethiopia rather than Germany, that's probably what it would have looked like. ", wrote Pitchfork, celebrating the album. Leading a trio with a formidable rhythm section, he has played numerous sold-out clubs and performed at major festivals. It's safe to say that the renewed interest in Mergia's laid-back Ethio grooves peaked after he released his comeback album "Lala." In 2018, the composer was featured in leading newspapers including The New York Times and The Guardian and performed over 70 concerts across Europe in the space of a year. In March, Lala Belu's successor, Yene Mircha, will perform in the streets and will easily prove that at 73 years old, this seasoned musician still has a few strings to his bow.
