About event
Ceremonial award ceremony at the Kunsthaus Dahlem
«A diasporist lives and paints in two or more societies at the same time. Diasporic art is fundamentally contradictory; it is internationalist and particularist at the same time. It can be incoherent - quite a blasphemy against the logic of the prevailing art doctrine - because life in the diaspora is often incoherent and full of tension; Heretical objections are their daily elixir of life.»
(from R. B. Kitaj: First Manifesto of Diasporism, Zurich 1988)
In memory of the illustrator and graphic artist Lea Grundig (née Langer, 1906–1977) and the painter Hans Grundig (1901–1958), the award for outstanding achievements is given to artists every two years awarded in the fields of fine art, art history and art education. Since 2011, the prize's patron has been the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, which, as a recognized institution of political education in the Federal Republic, is also committed to promoting art and science and promotes the development and research of the sometimes contradictory life and work history of the eponymous anti-fascist artist couple from Dresden. The prize was originally donated to the University of Greifswald in 1972 by Lea Grundig herself, but for political reasons it has not been awarded there since 1996.
97 artists from home and abroad took part in this year's international competition. A jury made up of top-class experts from the art and culture industry found the works of Cana Bilir-Meier and Ksenia Galiaeva in the visual arts category and the submission by Henryk Gericke in the art education category to be worthy of the award. An art historical project by Sarnt Utamachote receives the offer for in-depth research work in 2026. An honorable mention goes to the art education project “ArtISIa” of the Initiative for Self-employed Immigrants (ISI e. V.).
