Queer Drama Presents Batty Bwoy
Batty Bwoy begins from a place of play and desire, entangled in a vortex of violence and glamorous cruelty. Harald Beharie appropriates the Jamaican term "Batty Bwoy" (literally "boy - ass"), a slang term for a queer person, and his work overturns the myths of the black queer body, revealing the vulnerable possibilities in the game between consciousness and naivety.
In an odyssey of droning prog-rock, Batty Bwoy explores the absurdity of queer monstrosity, both attacking and embracing entrenched narratives—those that conflate fear of the queer body with the notion of the perverse and deviant figure. The term "Batty Bwoy" evokes an ambivalent being on the threshold of a fragile body, liberated power, joy and batty energy!
The work draws inspiration from mythologies, harmful stereotypes, feelings and fantasies about the queer body and identities, homophobic lyrics of dancehall songs, Italian giallo films of the 70s. years, resilient "gully queens" and queer voices from Norway and Jamaica who participated in the process.
