About event
The exhibition “Skin and Wood” in the Haus am Kleistpark presents four cycles by the photographer Loredana Nemes. In these, created over the last six years, she deals with the themes of nature, love and roots.
In “Sicilia” (2024–25), to be seen for the first time in Germany, she celebrates the connection between people and nature as well as the diversity of both in this European place by portraying the Sicilians and their favorite trees on her many journeys across the island. She enters into a conversation with the living presence of nature and hears stories from the islanders that are characterized by nature, love, escape and the feeling of deep connection with the earth of Sicily. In Sicilia, the artist breaks away from clichés and shows a new, unique understanding of the island - mixing black and white and color for the first time.
With the series “Immergrün” (2020), she explores the question of how photography can visualize decades of love. How can the soul and body kinship of lovers be expressed? Loredana Nemes found the answer in analogue double exposures, in which she allowed photographic celluloid and chance to weave the bodies of these lifelong couples onto a negative. She accompanies these photographs with poetic texts that condensely tell of the encounters with the 14 couples.
The cycles “Grey Tree and Sea of Heaven” (2019–23) and “White” (2024) are an ode to the tree and its beauty that extends through all seasons. Both series also refer to Transylvania, where Loredana Nemes was born and which she had to leave in 1986 for political reasons. The beeches and the Carpathians that carried them also remained behind. In 2019 she first encountered the Jasmund National Park on Rügen with its beech trees - familiar trees from her childhood. She returned there fourteen times to transform “her” beech trees into tender shades of gray on the Hochuferweg, following in the footsteps of Caspar David Friedrich, and juxtaposed these photographs with the vastness of the sea. "White" takes Nemes to the other end of Germany, where she encounters the magic of these snowy, misty conifers during a break in the Alps and writes about it: "There are days when the sky and the earth disappear and what remains is beautiful. There are days when you can cut fir trees out of the clouds and look at them for a long time. Then the now shines so alone."
With "Skin and Wood" Loredana shows Nemes Trees and faces, human features and plant forms, depicted with formal clarity and poetic restraint. The works neither document nature nor idealize it; rather, they listen to her. The artist's gaze meets that of the trees and people, who become conversation partners in an unspoken dialogue.
Loredana Nemes (born 1972 in Sibiu/Hermannstadt, Romania) first studied German literature and mathematics at the elite RWTH University in Aachen before turning to photography in 2001 and has lived and worked as an artist in Berlin ever since. Her works have been shown in numerous national and international exhibitions, most recently in the Stadthaus Ulm and in the Berlinische Galerie. Her work is also represented in numerous collections worldwide, including the Folkwang Museum, Essen and the Spallart Collection, Salzburg. Nemes has published numerous monographs, including Graubaum und Himmelmeer (2023), Immergrün (2021), Gier Angst Liebe (2018), beautiful (2013) and beyond (2010).
