About the program:
The third concert is all about a theme that composers have been inspiring for centuries: hope and desperation. Music that comes from tensions and radical events, but in which a spark of light always resounds. The contemporary composer Pēteris Vasks translates this into pure melodies and essential sounds, while George Crumb in Black Angels challenges the musicians to the extreme. A classic ironing quartet is being extended here with percussion, gong and even sounding wine glasses, with which he sorts out the boundaries of classical music.
We end with Strauss' Metamorphoses, a moving work written in the aftermath of the Second World War and full of naemia and reflection:
