The export of beef is one of the pillars of the Nicaraguan economy, but the gigantic business also brings with it the devastation of huge areas of the forest. Much weaker but persistent opponents are groups of the local population.
The Rama and Kriol communities are the original population of the rainforest and descendants of African slaves from the colonial era. In canoes and on foot, they comb the Indio Maíz nature reserve, looking for illegal settlers and trying to prevent them from destroying the forest. Farmers working for rich cattle breeders, however, make no secret of the fact that they have no intention of stopping the felling, as beef from Nicaragua is in high demand, especially in the US. But people have to make a decision: money or life? Those for whom the forest is their home are clear. The corrupt government and police ignore their pleas and refuse to act, so the locals try to achieve their goal in various other ways.
