Silk Non-Road/Silk non-road
Author: Katarína Balúnová
Curator: Michaela Šuranská
Rozkvet Gallery, Banská Bystrica
opening: 25.2. 2025 at 19:00 hrs
Duration of the exhibition: 25.2. - 22.3. 2025
Silk Non-Road exhibition will present the latest project of visual artist Katarína Balúnová. Its work moves across the media, but with a strong basis in a geometrizing, semi -fracture painting concentrated on the language of signs, symbols and color areas, expanding into wider spatial installations or object "constellations". He has been involved in utopia, memory, transcendent, universe and human archetypes for a long time. Balúnová, in addition to the home environment, where she also works as a curator and pedagogue at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica (FVU), often forms abroad, to residential artistic stays, where her projects respond to local historical, religious and cultural specifics through working with cultural archetypes , performance, video, found object and others.
In the Silk Nesesty project, the author focused on the location around the village of Pukanec in Štiavnické vrchy, where there is a large concentration of more than three -year -old black mulberry trees (Morus Nigra). According to the local legend, the leaves of the trees were to serve as a food for the silkworm of the (utopian) efforts of the Habsburg monarchy to extend the production of silk. Balúnová in the project deals with this story in order to draw attention to the importance of natural heritage - the largest documented local concentration of black mulberry in Central Europe (over 400 trees), but also within the post -colonial context - in colonial companies Silk was a sign of social status and nobles.
Silk dough was in the past a connecting thread between East and West, and after its network myths, knowledge of astronomy, as well as religious ideas were spread. Balúnová points to the mythical potential of a natural monument, formulated in the title of the exhibition. Oral history justifies the cultivation of the sea around Pukanec with the similarity of the local country with Chinese nature. Legends in the current post -factual period take on specific meanings and forms. This aspect introduces us not only to the concepts of past empires, but also in the disturbing context of contemporary geopolitical crises.
The author brings a personal plane to the project, based on her own presence in the locality, creates as a performer, uses the morphology of mulberry leaves and the motif of a female skirt, works with the right silk fiber. In the Gallery, he will present works in the form of paintings, cyanotypes, Site Specific Installation and VideoPerformance.
