Location: Haus des Rundfunks & Großer Sendesaal, Masurenallee 8-14, Berlin - Bezirk Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf
About event
In his new book “If I Were a Cloud,” Volker Weidermann focuses on a special moment in Kaléko’s life: the year 1956, when she returned from exile. She traveled to Berlin, the city where she had been happy, and across the country for a year. Almost every day she sent letters to her husband in New York and told him about fairytale successes and about an old, new country.
A shining exception in German literature
No one embodies the Berlin of the Weimar Republic between the gray of the typewriter, bright cinema advertisements and never-ending nights in the Romanesque Café as much as the melancholic urban poet with her sparkling wit. Even after her escape from the National Socialists in 1938, she sang about this lost homeland in verses about emigrant life in New York, Jerusalem and elsewhere.
Most read German poet to date
Her work inspires: For example, the Berlin songwriter and music producer Dota Kehr, who not only set Kaléko's poems to music, but also inspired many colleagues in the music scene for Kaléko's texts, who with her the new presented the songs that were created.
"If I were a cloud"
The actress Nina Kunzendorf reads from Mascha Kaléko's texts. The event will be moderated by Shelly Kupferberg and Thomas Böhm.
"If I were a cloud" by Volker Weidemann will be published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch in October 2025. The internationally renowned actress, director and screenwriter Maria Schrader read the audio book together with Ulrich Matthes (Der Audio Verlag/radio3).
