About event
Richard Sparka is the urban neurotic of the 21st century!
With "Hoplopoiia" Jochen Schmidt draws a pointed portrait of society that shows the overtaxing and isolation of people in our fast-paced present and always looks at his hapless hero Sparka with merciless humor.
While everything is changing far too quickly, Richard Sparka can only look back at the events in amazement and resignation. His relationship with Klara is over, the children are growing up, the parents are getting old. Life in the city where he was born and which has always been his home also seems increasingly impossible to him. The newspaper stand in his trusted late-night shop had to make way for a crisps shelf - nothing less than a disaster for Richard. And Richard is convinced that the hip new ice cream shop around the corner will transform his neighborhood until the rents are unaffordable. How do others manage to keep their heads above water in the face of these drastic developments? Richard goes looking for traces of his childhood in the GDR. Does his inability to live have something to do with growing up in a dictatorship? Would his view of the future be more optimistic if he had taken the opportunity to become a mathematician back then? “Hoplopoiia” is the third novel with Richard Sparka after “Zuckersand” and “Phlox”, a clever, profound and hilarious view of the world by a masterful doubter who has not given up the search for the right life.
Jochen Schmidt was born in Berlin in 1970. In 2023 he received the Eisenhüttenstadt Steel Foundation's Literature Prize. He is the co-author of the Marzahn writing workshop in 2025.
