About event

Guest facilitator Leticia Barreto will demonstrate the how to create a sense of depth using collage techniques

When we create a more complex composition, using several elements in a collage, it is very usual to get a lot of visual confusion, where the elements seem to "fight" with each other. There are various elements and principles of visual language that can help organize a composition, such as the use of color, contrasts, and gradations.
To create a sense of space we can explore differences in size, contrast, color, and texture between the various elements of a composition. On the other hand, collage, as an artistic language, celebrates rather than denies the lack of depth in cut-out shapes. Thus, it is also possible to purposefully explore flat shapes in a collage, achieving a sense of depth that is, shall we say, more poetic, metaphorical, and less literal.
There are so many ways to create a spatial sense in collage that we'll be offering two workshops on the theme.
In the second workshop of the series, we will work on strategies used by contemporary collagists to create a sense of space, experimenting with alternative and 3D approaches.
Although linked, the workshops are independent and can be attended separately.

About Leticia Barreto:

(b. 1974 Sorocaba/SP – Brazil) is a multimedia artist and art educator. She studied fine arts at Istituto Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, with a Rotary Foundations scholarship. It was in 2000, in Italy, that she started exploring the language of collage. She holds a Master’s in Visual Arts and Intermedia from Évora University in Portugal. She works at Nextart in Lisbon, where she teaches watercolour and mixed media. She is a member of the Collage Working Club, where she has organised several collage workshops.
At the same time, she develops her regular artistic practice. She has been exhibiting internationally since 2000 in institutions, museums, cultural centres and art fairs. In her artistic work, the concept determines the language and technique to be used. She likes to play with paper fragments, creating visual and conceptual analogies until poetry emerges.

Collage Working Club (CWC) is a weekly open workspace for artists working in the medium of paper. Organised in the format of alternate ‘drop in’ sessions and workshops masterclasses, it has both a regular facilitator, whilst also involving the artist community in the sharing of knowledge and skills. Providing materials, education and connections is the primary aim of CWC, and it will do this through the interdisciplinary art of collage as both an art form and a tool for personal growth.
