About event
Judit Elek (born 1937) is a central figure in both Hungarian documentary and narrative cinema. After studying at the Budapest Film School, which she entered in 1956, just before the Hungarian uprising, her early short films emerged from the Béla Balázs Studio, which she helped found— at that time a place of experimentation. Her life and her films are closely tied to the historical events of the 20th century. She has directed both feature films that adhere to the cinéma vérité tradition and intimate biographical portraits, as well as documentaries about marginalized people. In 1969 she was subjected to an informal professional ban, preventing her from making feature films for eight years. From the 1990s onward, when greater artistic freedom became possible, her Jewish heritage began to permeate her work in both documentary and fictional forms.
