About event

Can states truly justify their actions through human rights? And who gets to decide when such justifications are legitimate?

We invite scholars, legal professionals, students of law and political science, and all those interested in human rights discourse to join us for the upcoming webinar:

📅 3 September 2025, 12:30 CEST
📍 Online | Language: English

This session will present a collaborative book project from WP3 of the Horizon Europe HRJust project (States’ Practice of Human Rights Justification). The discussion will bring together leading scholars from the fields of EU law, international law, political theory and philosophy to critically examine how human rights are invoked by states and the EU as part of their legislative and political decision-making.

📚 From domestic courts to global forums, our panellists will explore when such justifications are valid, using a variety of academic and methodological lenses.

🎙️ Speakers:
Ester Herlin-Karnell (Gothenburg University, Sweden)
Enzo Rossi (University of Amsterdam, Netherlands)
Aravind Ganesh (Sussex University, UK)
Claudio Corradetti (Tor Vergata Rome University, Italy)
Ayelet Banai (Haifa University, Israel)
Nikola Schmidt (Institute of International Relations Prague, Czech Republic)

Organised by research team members of the HRJust project Dr Federica Cristani and Barbora Lukešová.
