About event

The first evening of the Dance in the Arena cycle will bring a meeting with two outstanding personalities of Slovak contemporary dance, who intensively present their work at home and on the international stage. Through two dance performances, he will offer the audience a unique insight into the diverse forms and procedures of dance virtuosity and choreographic processing.

Michal Heriban: I AM PLACEBO

Michal Heriban is a Slovak choreographer, performer and visual artist working mainly in Bratislava, Munich and Prague. He is the co-founder of the One Breath Theater and has been collaborating with the German choreographer and visual artist Micha Purucker for a long time. His work is characterized by strong visuality, physical intensity and the connection of structured choreography with authentic stage presence.

The dance performance I AM PLACEBO explores body memory, subconscious habits and mechanisms that shape our behavior. This is an award-winning solo, which last year won the prestigious DOSKA theater award in the category Extraordinary performance in dance theater.

Tomáš Danielis: INNER GARDEN

Tomáš Danielis is a choreographer, media artist and curator, whose work is based on the principle of the integrity of perception – connecting the body, text, image, sound and space into a unified artistic form. His works move on the border of dance, performance and intermedial art. He is the recipient of several international awards, including the Contest - TanzRat Wien (2007), and is considered one of the leading figures of the Slovak dance generation of his time.

In the new INNER GARDEN, he will perform in a duet with Slovak dancer Nikola Kišacová. The piece was recently presented as part of a residency at the Ponec Theater in Prague and brings an intimate view of the dialogue between bodies, space and the inner world of the performers. It explores what it means to be close to one another - across generations, experiences and perspectives. He asks what we inherit apart from social structures, genetics or practical, material things: personal gestures, meanings (emotional, intellectual, personal), experiences and knowledge, silence – the small details of human existence. What happens when lived experience becomes performative material? What are we unintentionally passing on? What remains of a person after his departure?
