About event

On the occasion of the reopening of the VBKÖ archive, we get insights into the current exhibition and the VBKÖ history

The Association of Female Visual Artists of Austria (VBKÖ) has recently reopened its archive. The first comprehensive renovation - made possible by the generous support of the Cultural Department of the City of Vienna (MA 7) - improves the conditions for the long-term preservation of the historical materials and at the same time strengthens the opening of the archive to a broader public.

The exhibition presents the archive as a living collection that spans more than a century of artistic creation and reflects the constant change in queer feminist organizational work since the founding of the VBKÖ in 1910. It provides insights into the complex, sometimes contradictory history of the association, into its institutional development and breaks, into the works and memories of the members, as well as into contemporary approaches to archival practice. Materials from the archive are the starting point for artistic works and research projects that critically examine the archive and the history of the VBKÖ. Conceived as an active place of dialogue, the exhibition enables an exchange about feminist art practice and history and the archive offers a space for research and joint reflection.

The exhibition shows works by seven artists who have dealt intensively with the VBKÖ archive as part of the residency program for VBKÖ members: Pêdra Costa, Zoe Gudović, Daniel Hill, Vinko Nino Jaeger, Eszter Katalin, Tahereh Nourani and Christina Werner. Based on documents, photographs, objects, files and voices from the archive, as well as its silence on acts of violence, the artists have developed installation, video, sound and performance works. Together, the works question what the archive preserves, what it excludes and what it might hold for the future. They address politics, ideology, queer kinship, resilience, solidarity and collective imagination and follow connections over time between the women* and queer people who have shaped the VBKÖ and are shaping it today. The exhibition positions the archive as a place of exchange, reconnection and collective redesign.

Artists and participants: Pêdra Costa, Zoe Gudović, Daniel Hill, Vinko Nino Jaeger, Eszter Katalin, Tahereh Nourani, Christina Werner, VBKÖ members, SKGAL, living library of becomings and more.

ENGLISH

We have something special for our IGersAustria community! At the IGersWalk at STRABAG ART Site, the artist Emma Hummerhielm Carlén will personally guide us through the exhibition. She is the STRABAG ART Award winner @hummeremma

Gently flowing curtain fabrics, suggested interiors, window frames, plinths and remnants of antique sculptures, as well as water lily ponds, are among the visual motifs of Emma Hummerhielm Carlén. Wax, plaster and white paint, photographs washed out through countless photocopying processes, minimalist sculptural objects and placements are the painterly means from which the sense of something absent emerges – semiotic in-between worlds that move between visibility and withdrawal.

The sensuality and poetics of her motifs, materials and surfaces are embedded by Emma Hummerhielm Carlén into cool, precise spatial constellations that arise in dialogue with the architectural conditions of the representation context. Depicted spaces and sculptural elements, objects and architecture, real and reproduced space, merge with one another.

The STRABAG ART Site itself becomes an image space in which works and existing architecture are interwoven into a compositional structure. Based on the architecture of the premises and the permanently installed works by Bruno Gironcoli, Hummerhielm Carlén composes partition walls, sculptures and wax works into an overall image through an expanded painterly process.
