About event
IGersWalk in the ALBERTINA: Gothic Modern – Munch, Beckmann, Kollwitz (empty museum)
Tuesday October 14th, 2025 | 6:00 p.m. to around 8:00 p.m.
Modern meets Gothic in the ALBERTINA's large autumn exhibition. The focus is on masterpieces from Symbolism to Expressionism, which are inspired by the emotional expressiveness of medieval art.
The large-scale thematic exhibition uses around 200 works to highlight a development in the period from 1875 to 1925, in which numerous artists such as Paula Modersohn-Becker, Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Vincent van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, Käthe Kollwitz, Edvard Munch, Egon Schiele and Helen Schjerfbeck were consciously inspired by the expressive art of Holbein, Dürer, Cranach or Baldung Grien. The encounter with medieval aesthetics evoked great feelings in modern times and opened up new ways for artists to deal with the fundamental questions of human existence.
