Music improvisation for silent films has an old and a new “tradition”. Similar to the job of the church organist, there were, in addition to composed orchestral works, at the beginning of the 20th century. Film companions who brought the moving images to life in the style of the time and sometimes using motif books. This genre has been enjoying popularity again in the contemporary music scene for some time, as it makes it possible to open up a new artistic level to film: old black and white films (or monocolored ones) with music of our time.

Questions that arise for improvising musicians are: Do I want to use the music in the service of the film? Or are music and film equal partners? Or can two parallel, largely independent levels arise that are only connected by the viewer?

In the workshop we will deal with different types of music creation: leitmotifs, atmospheric play to scenes, overall dramaturgy, types of interaction and instrumentation in larger ensembles, dealing with film cuts, transitions, etc. The big challenge is to stay in the flow with improvised music while the film is a fixed, unchanging visual guideline offers.
